Back to the dark ages……

Sorry followers that I have been radio silent, but I have recently moved flat and don’t have my internet connection installed yet.  As I have spoken about before on this blog I am a technophobic and have been under the impression that I am not that reliant on the web at all.  WRONG!!!

I have felt like when you have one of those dreams where you are running around in public naked.  I have had to rely on my mobile network to try and run the laptop.  This is a bad idea on two levels.

Firstly the new flat is a black out zone for both my internet and phone connection.  Cue lots of moving around the flat trying to find a spot that the connection could be found.  Not impressed.

Secondly my phone bill doesn't look to impressive because unlimited data with a * attached means that its only unlimited until the point your provider thinks is reasonable.  My advice in this matter is always check the small print!

This led me to change providers for the actual broadband and TV.  I have a handy tip for those folks from the UK try before you buy.  Just follow this link and it will lead you to a website that gives unbiased advice on what providers can offer you in your area.

If like me you don’t understand the difference between with an upload and download also follow this link to this ISP article.  This is a handy article that battles the jargon and gives a simple and easily understood explanations on what kind of connection you have, what to expect from speeds and what to look for to cater for your individual usage needs.   I am hoping this post has been educational and finds you all in good spirits and enjoying your undisturbed internet streaming.

Primary schoolers are catching up with me!!

Evening folks, hears my newest rant/blog!! So I was doing my voluntary job today and two things happened.  Firstly I had to aid some of the primary one children, now bear in mind these children can be as young as four years old! Yes I said four years old and I am helping them to set up  a word document, create shapes, change the size of those shapes, colour those shapes and I have to admit there was at least one moment I had to take the mouse and double check I knew how to do it myself!!

As I am in the process of heading towards teaching I am starting to feel that maybe a course specialising in computer software might have to be on the horizon, and here I thought the English and maths might be the stickler.  The this afternoon in a primary two class the teacher informs me that yesterday the class made 3d robots on the computer and had emailed them as an attachment to other teachers within the school, now I know this is the way of the world but when five year old's are outsmarting your technological abilities I think it’s time to sign up for the Barclays bank kids code writing class.

I wonder if I should get involved with the Which report on computers and laptops that thing on the TV that lets your granny connect and play bingo on Facebook (My 83 year old grandmother included).  I am all for this progressive route for children as it seems the way of the world is going to be online.  I only ask if anyone could recommend any light reading, internet surfing or literature that might lead my down the technology path, but of the worst comes to the worst, answers on a postcard!!
